Athletics Tanzania Federation 


Athletics Tanzania (AT) is the national governing body for track and field, road races, and cross-country running in Tanzania. 

It is affiliated with both the National Sports Council of Tanzania (NSC) and World Athletics (WA), the international governing body for the sport.

Affiliation and Governance

National Sports Council of Tanzania (NSC): 
  • The NSC is a corporate body established to develop, promote, and control all forms of amateur sports in Tanzania. 
  • Its functions include providing training staff, grants-in-aid, facilities, and equipment to national sports associations like Athletics Tanzania. 

  • The NSC also approves international and national sports competitions and works to facilitate cooperation among various associations. National sports associations must be registered with the NSC.

World Athletics (WA): 
  • World Athletics is the international governing body for athletics. 
  • Its responsibilities include standardizing rules and regulations, certifying athletic facilities, managing world records, and organizing international competitions like the World Athletics Championships. 
  • Athletics Tanzania is one of more than 200 national member federations affiliated with World Athletics. 
  • This affiliation requires AT to abide by WA's rules and regulations.

Athletics Tanzania's Role and Objectives

Athletics Tanzania is responsible for all aspects of the sport within the country. Its key objectives and responsibilities include:

  • Development and Promotion: To promote, develop, and strengthen athletics in Tanzania, ensuring the country can compete on the world stage.

  • Competition Management: Planning and creating work plans for regional, zonal, national, and international competitions, including the National Athletics Championship.

  • Athlete Development: Unearthing and grooming talent from the grassroots level to prepare them for high-performance competition.

  • Administrative Structure: Providing an administrative structure and support services for the effective functioning of the federation and the sport in general.

  • Officials and Coaches: Overseeing the recruitment, training, certification, and deployment of athletics officials and coaches.

  • External Relations: Maintaining good relationships with the government, other sporting bodies, corporate sponsors, and the media.

Athletics Tanzania (AT) is dedicated to elevating athletics in Tanzania. 

Its key objectives are centered on a comprehensive approach to developing the sport, from grassroots to the international stage.

Development and Competition

  • Athlete Development: AT aims to implement a comprehensive program to nurture athletes from the grassroots level to elite, high-performance competition.

  • Event Management: The organization is responsible for planning and executing various athletic competitions, including national championships and participation in major international events like the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and the Olympics.

Administration and Support

  • Personnel: AT oversees the recruitment, training, and certification of officials and coaches to support its programs.

  • Federation Structure: The organization provides the administrative framework needed to ensure the efficient operation of the federation and the sport.

Stakeholder Relations

  • Partnerships: AT works to maintain strong relationships with the government, other sports organizations, and corporate sponsors.

  • Media and Promotion: It actively engages with both local and international media to positively promote athletics and the federation's activities.

  • To provide a platform for unearthing talent through competitions like the National Athletics Championship.

  • To groom and prepare high-performance athletes to represent Tanzania in major international events.
