Simbu takes Tanzania's first global title with marathon victory in Tokyo

September 15, 2025

Alphonce Felix Simbu made history on Monday (15), becoming the first athlete from Tanzania to win a global title by claiming gold in the men's marathon at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.

He achieved the feat in style – with the smallest winning margin ever in a global championships marathon, having outsprinted Germany's Amanol Petros in the closing stages to finish just 0.03 ahead.

One of only two athletes representing Tanzania at the World Championships, Simbu was always in contention. He kicked in the closing 30 metres and with victory, he upgraded the world bronze medal he won in 2017 to gold.

“Today means celebrations in Tanzania,” he said. “We have written new history as a country. It was my dream. I am at peace. It is about discipline, training and never giving up.

“After 2017 I have been trying to win another medal but failed at it. Last year Paris was a challenge and this year I told myself: I will try my best. I did different types of training under different weather conditions.”

Simbu and Petros were both credited with the same time: 2:09:48.

“I have never seen something like this in the marathon – both races (men and women) came down to a sprint finish. It's like the 100m,” said Petros.

“This is four months of hard work in training – running, eating and sleeping. It was hard. But this silver gives me energy and bigger motivation that I can win bigger competitions. I was so sure I was winning, he (Simbu) surprised me. He kicked like crazy. I accept I lost today but tomorrow I can win. Today is a learning experience.”

Italy’s Iliass Aouani took bronze in 2:09:53.

“I am proud and happy about the way I conducted the race,” he said. “I was relaxed at the end and pushed through, but the other guys had more legs than me. It means a lot. This is a hard sport, people do not know that behind this medal are a lot of frustrations, a lot of bad races, missed opportunities.”

Kenya’s Vincent Ngetich took an early lead, with all the athletes grouped together. He led through 5km in 15:22, followed closely by athletes including Petros, Simbu and Aouani, plus Abel Chelangat, Isaac Mpofu, Sondre Moen, Suldan Hassan, Deresa Geleta and Stephen Kissa.

In the hot and humid conditions, athletes cooled themselves with ice and sponges, even passing them to each other.

Ngetich, running on the edge of the course, slightly increased the pace, with Chelangat and Kissa close behind. The leading pack briefly scattered before regrouping.

At Akihabara turn, Ngetich pushed the pace again, but Germany’s Richard Ringer took over and led the group through 10km in 30:48, alongside defending champion Victor Kiplangat, Chelangat, Petros, Simbu, Ngetich and Mohamed Reda El Aaraby.

The leading roles kept changing, with Morocco’s El Aaraby taking over before Ethiopia’s Tadese Takele – this year’s Tokyo Marathon champion – surged ahead. Ngetich again took the lead through the Ginza turn.

Kiplangat then grabbed a cooler and moved to the front, pushing the pace downhill. Sweden’s Hassan led a group of more than 20 runners through 20km in 1:01:54 but Kiplangat remained in control at the halfway point (1:05:19), followed by the likes of Hassan, Geleta, Kissa, Elroy Gelant and Kipkoech.

Geleta took a turn at the front, leading the pack through 30km in 1:32:27, but it was Kiplangat who surged at 33km – leading for around 6km before falling back and out of contention.

Meanwhile, his compatriot Chelangat took the lead, followed by a series of challengers – all in single file. Soon, the lead group was down to five.

As the race wound up, Chelangat and Haimro Alame dropped back, leaving Aouani, Petros and Simbu to battle for the gold. With the stadium in sight, Simbu nearly went off course.

Once inside, Petros surged with 200 metres to go, with Simbu in pursuit. Petros glanced back twice and the world title came down to a photo finish. Both were timed at 2:09:48, separated by just three hundredths of a second.

“When we entered the stadium, I was not sure if I would win. I did not know if I won. But when I saw the video screens and me on the top of the results, I felt relieved,” said Simbu.

“Before this event, I was training in Tanzania, and the conditions there helped me to win this race. I remember, when I was in Paris last year (at the Olympics), it was very challenging for me – the hills, all ups and downs. So, before Tokyo, I decided to train on different surfaces. Sometimes I went to hills, and that is what made the difference here. I had many tough moments during the race, but I told myself that I would never give up.”

Giniki - Runner Who Has Sights Set on Glory

May 22, 2016

Emmanuel Giniki Gisamoda in China Recently
Emmanuel Giniki stands tall among the excelling local runners who have weathered the storm to stay at the helm of Tanzania's athletic platform. Born in 1988 in a poor family based in Hanang, Katesh, Manyara, Giniki's running talent can be traced back since his childhood at the Jorodom Primary School.
"I am coming from a poor family where we sometimes went without food. That was our daily life. This is what encouraged me to train hard and I am determined to use athletics to bring my family out of poverty," he said during an exclusive interview with The Citizen.
After completing primary school education in 2007, Gikini joined Ganana Secondary School in Hanang where his running talent was revealed. "I used to compete and win many championships to the extent that teachers and most of my friends suggested that I better drop lessons to concentrate on athletics," he said.
A few years later, he joined the Arusha-based Shahanga Sports Club where his talent was exposed to high profile trainers and other runners. "There I began to learn the game more professionally under the tutelage of widely experienced trainers," he noted.
Giving a brief over his experience, the 21-year-old marathoner who has so far scooped several medals and honours at different local tournaments, said the country was blessed with many talents, but there was no progressive plan to recruit and groom them.
"Athletics Tanzania (AT) must now prepare a good programme that will deal with identifying and recruiting young talented runners from the grassroots. Tanzania has been endowed with many good runners but the athletics body is not serious enough," he revealed.
Giniki who is inspired by England runner, Mo Farah, remains optimistic that Tanzania will one day outsmart leading countries like Ethiopia if the government started supporting the runners seriously.
"Athletes face several setbacks, ranging from poor training gear, lack of high skilled trainers as well as financial capacity to feature in different international tournaments," he noted.
OLYMPIC GAMES PREPS
Giniki is, however, worried over the Tanzanian runners' performance in the forthcoming 31st edition of the world's top crowd-puller event, the Olympic Games, due to poor preparations and financial constraints.
He said for Tanzania to compete highly in the games, there was a need for long-term preparations.
He disclosed that most of the countries that excel in the Games have a good tendency of preparing their runners a year before.
"I don't have any doubts with the runners who will represent the county in the Rio De Jenairo event, but my worries are due to the poor preparations. There is no training gear so far, apart from the fact that they need several international trials before the event", he asserted.

From Rwanda : RAF deploys 46 monitors in Kigali Peace Marathon

May 22, 2016

The Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) has set out 46 people to monitor any cheating in the 12th edition of the Kigali International Peace Marathon today.
Over 4000 athletes from 32 nations will take part in the event which has 3 categories: 42km marathon, 21km half marathon and a 7km run for fun race.
RAF Secretary General Johnson Rukundo told Times Sport that the reason they are increasing supervision of the race is because of allegations of cheating in last year’s race.
“Some people claimed that one of our runners cheated his way to victory although there was no evidence of that. This time we are going to be a lot more vigilant and that is the reason we are using more people to monitor the race,” Rukundo said.
He further noted that; “Each running group will be led and followed by a team of these monitors who will be using motorbikes and another team will be deployed towards the finishing line.”
The Athletics federation had preferred to hire a drone from a Kenyan company that can be easily used by a mobile phone so that they crack down such athletes however according to Rukundo it was not possible to get it in time for the marathon.
“We hope this marathon will be the most successful because everything is in place,” he further added
The half marathon (21km) kicks off at 7:30am followed by the full marathon (42km) that will start fifteen minutes later while the Run for fun (7km) starts at7:50am.
The 21km race starts from Amahoro stadium via Chez Lando, Gishushu, MTN Centre Nyarutarama, Gacuriro, and back to Gishushu, Parliament, Umubano hotel and then to Gishushu, Gisementi, Tigo, University of Rwanda (former KIE), Control Technique, Sports View hotel and back to Amahoro stadium while the 42km will be twice this route.
The run for fun, which is 7km, will start from the Amahoro Stadium via University of Rwanda (former KIE), Control Technique, Sports View hotel and then back to the stadium.

T&F | Gidabuday Takes Home 5000 Meter Title At Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. (March 11, 2016) – Freshman Sydney Gidabuday ran to a 5000 meter crown at the NCAA Division II Championships on Friday to highlight Adams State University on day one of competition from the Robert W. Plaster Center.

Gidabuday's first place mark along with a fifth place finish from the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team currently position the Adams State University men in second place with 15 team points.

Gidabuday's 5000 meter time of 14:06.09 was enough to fend off Bryce Bradley of Grand Valley State University by 1.84 seconds. The title gives the freshman his sixth overall first place finish during the indoor season. Furthermore, he's now won the last four events he's raced dating back to his mile win at the UW Open on February 14th.

After 10 points from Gidabuday, the DMR team of Brian Baum, Robert Guinn, Kale Adams, and Oliver Aitchison supplied five team points by virtue of placing fourth in a field of 12. The Grizzlies finished in 9:49.90 in a highly contested race. Of the top eight teams, less than five-seconds separated the first through eighth place finishes.

Saturday's final in the mile will see a contingent of four Grizzlies after a superb showing in Friday's preliminary. Holding true to his national top time, Aitchison finished first in the mile prelim with a mark of 4:04.91. Also advancing were Baum in fifth (4:06.27), Chandler Reid in sixth (4:06.30), and Jackson Sayler in ninth (4:06.90).
